Do I have to spar?

No. Every athlete makes his/her own decision about entering competitions and the training schedule is different for those that want to compete in sparring.

Do I have to wear a Taekwondo uniform?

No. At Artisan we want you to be as comfortable as possible and sometimes it takes a while to decide if you want to stick with Taekwondo. Students are not required to wear a uniform until their first belt test or their first competition.

What’s the difference between Taekwondo and other Martial Arts?

Each sport has it’s own unique philosophies and practices. Some are grappling sports, like Judo or Ju Jitsu while others, like Taekwondo and Karate, focus on standing combat. Taekwondo originated as a defensive Martial Art used by Korean soldiers. The signature Taekwondo technique, the flying sidekick, was used by a soldier to knock a warrior off a horse.

What is the difference between WTF Taekwondo and other Taekwondo organizations?

The rules that govern WTF Taekwondo all comply with the Olympic Games’ directives. As a WTF club, Artisan Taekwondo operates all training and competitions under those rules.

How long does it take to get a Black Belt?

Black belts are earned, not given, and so the length of time depends on the commitment and drive of each student. For most people, it takes at least three and a half years to earn their Black Belt.

Is Taekwondo training safe for children?

Discipline and self-control are a huge part of the curriculum and our instructors understand that to some 6 year olds, they do not come easy. Like every sport, there are certain precautions taken to prevent injury during the physical activity. And like every martial art, there is the risk of contact. However, the training aids, behavioural practices, rules, and protective gear that are constantly in use are all designed to keep everyone safe.
